‘Her commitment is second to none’

From Brittney Merritt’s first day at The Connor Group, her commitment to the company and hitting goals was evident to everyone around her. She quickly worked her way up through the ranks from turn tech, to upgrade tech, to lead tech and now partner.

“From the very beginning, I knew she would end up being partner,” partner Kia Fenty Ngo said. “When her name was announced during the National Awards broadcast, I cried. Everyone in the room screamed. It was a great moment for everyone because Brittney truly deserved and earned partner.”

This summer, Brittney went above and beyond, making sure West Village was prepared for the 136 move-ins. She’d be the last person to leave the property, making sure move-in packets were prepared and keys were ready, all while keeping turns and work orders up to date.

Brittney also has spent time developing other associates around her at West Village, helping set the property up for success long-term.

“Brittney always does more than what’s expected,” Kia said. “Her commitment is second to none. She’s always the last person to leave with me, has a positive attitude, and truly cares about the company and our residents.”

We recently asked Brittney to do a Q & A with the Loop…

Where are you from/where did you go to school?
I was born in Washington, D.C.  I grew up and attended school in Raleigh, North Carolina.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I had a dream of being a criminal forensics investigator. I like to get to the bottom of things.

Tell us about your family.
Family is the most important thing to me. We are a very close family. We get together weekly. I am the only girl and second oldest of four siblings. I’m by far my mom’s favorite child! We talk, text and Facetime daily. I have six nieces and nephews. My brothers each have two children, no need for me to have any. They are truly my kids!

How did you find out about TCG? What do you remember from your interview process?
I actually found the job on craigslist for Landis (Scales). About seven to eight months later, there was a turn tech position available, and she asked if I wanted to join the team. My first property was Autumn Woods in Carrboro, North Carolina. Six years later, we’re both still with TCG.

You’ve worked at one of our MOST complicated properties – West Village. What’s that been like?
West Village is hands down the most unique property you will ever work at. I’ve been here since day one, and I can tell you every single day is different. From fires to floods – we’ve had it happen at West Village. And we are still standing. It’s almost like survival of the fittest.  The great people I work with make it all worth it.

What’s your best advice for other associates who are looking to advance?
Be RELENTLESS and THINK LONG TERM!

Who’s been your biggest mentor?
Kia (Fenty Ngo). She is on point. She lives the core values and circle of success. I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Kia for the majority of my time with TCG. She pushes you to be the best you can be. Always ensures you take individual accountability and leads by example. It also comes as no surprise that she also is a partner.

Craziest e-call or TCG memory?
The gas explosion last April was by far the craziest experience I’ve had working at The Connor Group. It shook the whole downtown. I remember feeling a big “KABOOM.” Windows flexed, there was fire and glass everywhere. We initially thought someone had hit the building, but that definitely wasn’t the case. The explosion blew out windows along with doors in four of our buildings. That day was pretty crazy and hard on everyone.

What did it mean to you to earn partner?
It made me feel honored. Knowing that my hard work and dedication was acknowledged on such a high level caught me extremely off guard, but it was an extremely great day.

What’s something someone would be surprised to learn about you?
My favorite movie is The Devil Wears Prada, and I love The Golden Girls (so much that I’m in a Golden Girls group).
