You wouldn’t know by watching it, but the latest Connor Group training video was over 17 years in the making! Before partner and senior regional service trainer Rob Murray joined the company in 2005, he had been searching for a solution to fix leaking garbage disposals.
“It never made sense to me,” said Rob. “The only thing you’re ever told to do with a leaking garbage disposal is to replace it.”
The elusive task persisted into his early years with the Connor Group. Rob relentlessly tested potential solutions, but no long-term idea stuck.
“We’d pull leaking disposals out of apartments, trying everything from sealing the outside with silicone to torching the shaft seal bolt,” said Rob. “Nothing ever seemed to work.”
Rob was recently inspired to revisit his search after noticing an increasing trend of garbage disposal purchases on repair and maintenance budgets in Dallas. He teamed up with partner and regional service trainer Tad Hunter in Columbus to take apart yet another leaking disposal. After cleaning rust off the unit, they discovered corroded holes in the steel shell of the grinder. The rest, as they say, ends up in our latest Connor Group training video.
After ending his nearly two-decade-long search, Rob has a newfound appreciation for never assuming something can’t be fixed.
“You can’t break something that’s already broken,” said Rob. “Don’t be afraid to take things apart and test your own ideas.”
