‘We can train everything’

Our summer service hiring blitz brought 30 new maintenance associates to The Connor Group in July. But even before that, our Charlotte service team was growing to meet our needs in the market. Since 2020, we’ve added three new properties. And in the last four months, we’ve hired 12 new maintenance associates.

“With that many new hires, training was incredibly important in Charlotte,” partner and regional service trainer Carl Williams said. “We’ve been doing bi-weekly training to go over standards, plumbing, ACs, etc., in addition to one-on-one training.”

In the heat of the summer – AC training was a top priority. Understanding our repair vs. replace processes helps our associates stay under their repair and maintenance budgets and achieve our NOI goals.

The new maintenance teams sent Loop photos from a July training where Carl reviewed AC recovery, recharging procedures and got the newest members of the Charlotte service team used to reading gauges. Carl explained when these new hires started, they didn’t know what HVAC stood for.

“We hire for traits. I can’t teach people to have a good attitude, show up on time and go the extra mile. Those are qualities they came to The Connor Group with,” Carl said. “We can train everything else.”

While the spring and summer have been challenging – the training is paying dividends. On the last Maintenance Honor Roll, we had seven Charlotte associates recognized for outstanding performance:

  • Ben Leonhardt, Quarterside
  • Von Davis, Greenway
  • Mike Dawkins, Greenway
  • James Rabon, Greenway
  • Willie Edmonds, Cielo
  • Neil Jonnakuti, Southpark Morrison
  • Carl Terry Jr., Southpark Morrison

“We haven’t been this good in Charlotte in a long time,” Carl said. “I’m excited about each and every service associate. We’re a team.”
